Has Face recognition been added to the slideshow? Or is it only possible if you have flash?
Huh? You realize we talk about a slideshow and not a camera? :-)

According to Monokai's article located below, as3 is required but it appears to be written in the example. Perhaps someone with as3 experience can clue us in on how to use it. The source is available for download but I don't know how to use the as3 code to show a slideshow.

Does the as3 code go into the html???? Or does everything get compiled into a .swf??

You have to compile the AS3 code to a .SWF file. There are several ways to do this, via the command line with the free Flex SDK compiler (mxmlc), or via the Flash IDE itself. It's a little hard to explain this in a simple forum post. I suggest googling for how to compile an AS3 file into a .SWF file.
creator of Monoslideshowi had done that but alas....is there a small sample of the steps (more elaborate than the one on here?)
